Its that time of year again, tomatoes are ripening and its time to celebrate it. We are planning on running our second annual ‘Totally Terrific Tomato (TTT) festival’ in our garden centre on Sunday September the 1st from 11am – 5pm! Nicky Kyle is the founder of Ireland’s first ‘Totally terrific Tomato Festival’ and this year we hope to build on it. Last year was a great success with over 250 people turning out to view the Totally Terrific tomato’s!!! Michael (owner of Rolestown Garden Centre) has been carefully growing lots of unusual varieties of tomatoes for this momentous day.
We would like to invite you to help support our fun filled day celebrating all things tomatoes. One of our main focuses for this year is for the guys who grow some tomatoes along with the importance of preserving the valuable genetic heritage of all the old varieties. We would like to build on the tomato competitions with lots of different tomato categories from the largest tomato to the ugliest tomato. This year has been a much better year for growing tomatoes so we can’t wait to see all the entries. These will be Judged on the day by our friendly expert tomato lovers and we will have lots of prizes for each category. All entries welcome.
So we need your help to make this event a success and to spread the word and get the ‘Totally Terrific Tomato Festival’ message out there. We feel last year was a major success and believe it could be something that could turn into a annual horticulture event. Last year we had the launch of the black tomato ‘Indigo Rose’ which was the star of the show. This year we need another angle to capture the public’s imagination and we taught if you could plug the competition side of the festival and the importance of preserving the valuable genetic heritage of all the old varieties.
On the day we will have rare and unusual tomato exhibits, guest speakers on tomatoes who include Matthew Jebb, Tanguy De toulgoet and of course Nicky Kyle , a tomato competition ( for tomato growers), tomato tasting, a petting zoo, a large farmers market and lots more. We also plan to allow local allotments to set up stalls and sell their own produce to raise money for their allotments. To find out more click here!
