School Pupils Feed Their Minds at Loughry Campus

Over 600 GCSE Home Economics and Science pupils had the opportunity to open their minds to a career in the food and drink industry, through an innovative syllabus support event hosted by Loughry Campus, College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise, Cookstown.

The ‘Feed Your Mind’ event has now firmly established itself as an annual event within many of the 27 participating schools’ calendars. The one-day fun filled programme, which utilises the extensive practical facilities unique to Loughry, provided the students with an interesting and informative look at the use of science and technology in the Food and Drinks Industry. The pupils were taken through several practical demonstrations, including the very popular ice-cream manufacture and chocolate processing, as well as tickling their taste buds in new product development and finding out what’s really in a sausage. The programme is aimed at illustrating how various scientific techniques; technologies and consumer issues have a major impact on the food we eat.

The event was also an excellent opportunity for the pupils to hear first hand from Tasty Careers Ambassadors and past Loughry students, Ciaran O’Kane, Business Unit Manager, Moy Park and Suzanne McKay, Brand Manager, Dale Farm about the tasty careers in the food industry and how courses at Loughry could provide them with further study in an exciting and rewarding area. Loughry’s practically based courses and world class facilities ensure their students are well equipped to make the most of the excellent employment and career progression opportunities in one of our most successful industries.
