How to Wear Flowers in your Hair

Women have been wearing flowers in their hair for centuries. Even as early as Queen Victoria’s reign in the late 1800s, botanicals were a popular hair accessory. Nowadays, some of the most stylish celebrities have been bringing back the trend. Actress Sienna Miller wore an ornate floral headband at the Tony Awards this year, and singer-songwriter Lana del Rey has been known to don thick floral wreaths in her hair.

“Whether they are attached to clips or hair bands, flowers are a must-have for summer,” said personal shopper Sonja Grau, according to IOL Lifestyle.

This look is not just for a Caribbean vacation or a beach party anymore, either. Fashion blogger Jessica Weiss told the news source that having a florist prepare a headband is a great way to draw attention at an event. Even retailers are starting to embrace the trend: IOL Lifestyle reported that the chain Topshop, among others, has incorporated floral headbands into their summer collection.

As excited as you may be to try this look, it’s important to plan your outfit out when opting to don flowers since an over-the-top ensemble could take away from the delicate piece. Weiss recommended wearing a solid top, jeans and espadrille wedges for a casual but feminine summer look. Keep your makeup on the natural side as well.

Fortunately, flowers look great in both short and long hair, according to Grau. She did, however, note that they are especially eye-catching in an up-do. Antonio Weinitschke, an art director with the German Association of Hairdressers, advised to IOL Lifestyle that botanicals should be placed in sleek hair, as curly hair can overwhelm the look and eliminate the intended effect.

While a flower headband is an easy way to try out the trend, GirlsGuideTo suggested tucking one behind the ear. An off-kilter flower pinned to the side of a bun or chignon is especially elegant, while a smaller one clipped to a half up-do is a playful alternative.

Whatever your personal style or tastes, there are endless ways to make this summer hair trend your own.
