Greensod

Alive Volunteer Fair 2013

The Community Knowledge Initiative (CKI) at NUI Galway aims to promote greater civic engagement activities, through teaching & learning, research and volunteering at the levels of students, staff, courses, programmes and the university as a whole. Green Sod Ireland and CKI have been partners for the last number of years, with NUI Galway students actively participating in Green Sod Ireland through volunteering and service learning. In a further development, CKI and Green Sod Ireland are to strengthen and expand this partnership through EPIC – Engaging People in Communities.

Community Knowledge Initiative/Engaging People in Communities looks forward to expanding its relationship with Green Sod Ireland in the area of Community-Engaged Research, beginning with co-organising a public talk with Professor Eve Mitleton-Kelly on April 18th at the Moore Institute in NUI Galway and developing community engaged research partnerships into the future.

EPIC is a new development in CKI and builds on the success of its partnership with communities since its inception in 2001. It is a new form of civic engagement and its aim is to expand the relationship between NUI Galway and the wider society through the promotion of Community-Engaged Research. This involves supporting collaborative models of research, knowledge sharing and exchange, strengthening links between teaching and research and building capacity within communities. This new development aims to enhance sustainability and positive social change by promoting collaboration between NUI Galway and the local communities, and by seeing the partnerships as a mutual learning process and a possibility for sharing resources.
