GLDA Designer Profile – Gerry O’Keeffe

Gerry O’Keeffe operates a garden design, consultancy and landscaping business based in North Wexford. He qualified in horticulture in 1976, and worked in the Botanic Gardens, and in the horticultural industry in Ireland, before spending a decade working in rural development, water and woodland management in Asia and Africa.

Most of his work, ranging in scale from small urban to large rural gardens, is for private clients. He has also designed public spaces for local authorities, hospitals and special schools, throughout the country.

In addition to horticulture, he has pursued a lifetime interest in sculpture, mostly in wood, and more recently, in carving large outdoor pieces. This sculptural element is seen in the serpentine decks and large organically shaped ferrocement plant containers in many of his designs.

Gerry’s gardens are influenced by natural landscapes, using trees with an understorey of luxuriant planting, water, stone and wood to create calming, sustainable environments.

His emphasis on the initial consultation and concept stage of the design process, ensures that the final garden is suitable to the client’s requirements.

Plants are always the main element in his designs and are used to form areas of colour, texture and scent for year round interest.
