There are a number of reasons for the geranium resurgence, but experts say it has largely to do with the fact breeders have created a new variety of the flower. Along with providing gardeners with more colors and better durability, this new variety, known as pelargonium stands up to even extreme weather exceptionally well. These new breeds are especially attractive to people who may be just getting into gardening.
“The pelargonium instills confidence in the gardener, especially the new gardener,” industry insider Jim Kennedy told the newspaper. “That breeds success; they are going to come back next year for more.”
Aside from being relatively easy to care for, geraniums are a particularly popular plant because there are so many different styles to choose from, according to Better Homes and Gardens. For instance, if you’re looking to add some eye-catching color to your garden or front yard, the “American Bright Red” is a good option thanks to its large, bright red flower heads. For a lighter appearance, you may want to go with the “Daredevil Orchid” geranium, which offers a more subdued lavender hue that will add a subtle elegance to your landscape.
