Fota Garden History Summer School 2013

Fota Garden History Summer School 2013 taking place here in Fota House, Co Cork, from Monday 16th to Thursday 19th September with Garden Historian, Letta Jones.  The course has been designed for amateurs and professionals alike or anyone interested in exploring the history of Fota in a participative way. The course will engage participants in examining garden design, fashions and social history through a range of talks, walks and practical activities in the delightful setting of Fota House, Arboretum & Gardens. The Summer School will run from 10.30am to 4.30pm with all evening events being offered as optional extras. Lunch will be included for course participants every day.

Topics covered will include; Fota’s different garden areas, garden history as a discipline, garden buildings, the world in a garden, the Fota Frame Yard and thoughts on sharing Fota with the public.

Letta Jones MA, is a freelance Landscape Horticulturalist who teaches Garden History and Horticulture for the Kingcombe Field and Farncombe Centres, South London Botanical Institute, and for the WEA. She lectured in Birkbeck and Capel Manor Colleges for 15 years. She specialises in amenity trees, medicinal plants and history of public parks, from a botanical and contemporary perspective. Her courses successfully combine illustrated theoretical studies in the classroom with practical and enjoyable trips to arboreta, parks and gardens. Identification of plants is included.

Letta completed her MA at Birkbeck College in 2001 and the Schumacher College Certificate in Education for Sustainability in 2009.
