After the brightness and vibrancy of summer, flowers mellow into warm autumnal shades and berries, fruits and seasonal foliage add texture and character to your autumnal wedding flowers. We have asked expert Interflora florist and floral designer Janet Boast from Going Dutch in Nelson, Lancashire to share her thoughts on floral wedding trends this autumn.
What are the most common autumn wedding flowers that Brides select?
As autumn approaches brides tend to choose warmer seasonal colours for their bouquets. Gerbera’s are a popular choice this time of year along with roses, and calla lilies. Hypericum berries will add some lovely texture to your wedding flowers and you could also consider foliages such as oak and croton leaves.
If a Bride was looking for an alternative Autumn bouquet, what flowers and foliage would you recommend?
For an alternative bouquet I would suggest the bride be daring in her colour choice and consider shades of cerise, purples and reds.

A country hedgerow themed trailing bouquet would look stunning in autumn shades incorporating blackberries, twigs ivy and croton leaves for texture. Red trailing amaranthus, cherry brandy roses, mango calla lilies and burgundy carnations will all add to the autumnal look.
What are the main flower colour combinations for Autumn 2013?
Autumn isn’t just about oranges and browns, there are other stunning colour combinations that really bring the season to life. From soft misty colours such as apricot, peach, cream, bronze and lilac to bright strong shades of aubergine, red, burgundy and even a splash of cerise.
Can you give us some insight into what an Autumnal bride might have as table arrangements?
Flower decorations add the finishing touch to a wedding day and the top table arrangement should complement the bride’s flowers and theme.
A dramatic look would have trails of ivy and rubus, amaranthus, roses and lots of seasonal berries. Small ornamental gourds come in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes and can be hollowed out to include a tea light – casting a lovely warm glow over the table. Alternatively, gather a cluster of vases or jars filled with seasonal berries & roses with vines winding their way around the place settings.
If the Groom was looking for a stylish buttonhole, what advice would you give?
The groom’s buttonhole adds the finishing touch to the wedding flowers and should complement the bride’s bouquet perfectly. Less is sometimes more and a simple seasonal rose, foliage and autumnal berries would make a stylish choice.
Do you have any advice for brides looking to add an extra special touch to their flower decorations?
I would advise brides not to be afraid of being bold and experimenting with colour in their designs. Have a chat with their florist about colours and flowers as they might be surprised as to the range and variety of flowers and colours that are available to them in autumn.
To add extra special touches to the autumnal theme there are endless possibilities, from flowers in the church to welcome garlands on the doors. Instead of place settings why not give flower favours with the guest’s name attached with a ribbon.

Flowers set the theme for the day and complete the picture, they are a lasting reminder of your day and will feature on all the photos taken and looked back on years later.
