Mount Congreve Gardens is delighted to announce the much-anticipated return of the Rare and Special Plant Fair, proudly supported by Bord Bia, on Sunday, May 11th, 2025. This unique event promises garden enthusiasts, passionate collectors, and nature lovers an exceptional opportunity to explore an extraordinary selection of rare, unusual, and special plants — all set within the breathtaking surroundings of one of Ireland’s most celebrated gardens.
Mount Congreve Gardens will welcome up to 40 of Ireland’s leading specialist plant nurseries and expert growers. These dedicated professionals will gather to showcase a diverse and carefully curated range of plants, many of which are not commonly found in traditional garden centres. From rare perennials and exotic shrubs to elusive bulbs and heirloom varieties, visitors will have the chance to discover and purchase unique specimens that can transform their own gardens with character.
In addition to browsing the impressive plant selection, guests will benefit from the knowledge and passion of Ireland’s finest horticultural minds. Growers will be on hand throughout the day to offer advice, share cultivation tips, and provide insight into caring for these special plants — making it the perfect event for both seasoned gardeners and those just beginning their journey into the world of plants.
Speaking ahead of the event, Ray Sinnott, Estate Director at Mount Congreve Gardens, shared his enthusiasm: “The Rare and Special Plant Fair is always a standout occasion, and we are thrilled to once again host this exceptional gathering of growers, collectors, and plant lovers. There is a real sense of community and shared passion at this event, and it’s a rare chance to not only discover unusual plant varieties but to meet the people who know them best. Add to that the natural beauty of Mount Congreve Gardens in full spring bloom, and it truly is a day not to be missed.”
Also, on Sunday, May 11th, a talk with renowned horticulturist Elmer Dool will be hosted in the Ambrose Room as he honours his father, Herman Dool, former Garden Director at Mount Congreve Gardens. Working alongside Ambrose Congreve, Herman helped shape the gardens over four decades, creating breathtaking, colourful landscapes. Elmer’s talk will start at 11:00 AM, making the day a perfect outing for garden enthusiasts. Tickets for this talk can be reserved online at www.mountcongreve.com.
Founded in 2001, the Rare and Special Plant Fair has grown into a beloved tradition for garden lovers across the country. Each year, it draws visitors eager to expand their collections and immerse themselves in the rich and varied world of horticulture.
Beyond the fair, visitors are invited to explore the world-famous Mount Congreve Gardens, which will be at their seasonal best. Stroll through award-winning woodland walks bursting with colour, discover serene garden displays, and enjoy sweeping views of the River Suir. The day offers a true celebration of nature and gardening. Guests can also unwind at The Stables Café, where a selection of seasonal treats and refreshments will be served throughout the day.
