Congratulations to Joseph Massie who has been crowned RHS Chelsea Young Florist of the Year at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
It is the fourth consecutive year that Joe has won the competition, which aims to showcase the very best floristry talent among the 16-25 year old age group.
The theme for this year’s challenging competition was ‘Diamonds are Forever’ inspired by the Queens’ Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
The florists were asked to design and create a chandelier to be hung at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee dinner – quite a feat considering they had to design and construct the entire chandelier frame from scratch! As part of the brief the contestants were tasked with creating their own unique designs which had to include fresh flowers, foliage and plant material.
The judges were on the lookout for a high standard of technical skill and design and announced the competition results early this morning.
Several young Interflora florists made it through to the final heat of the competition and were awarded medals for their innovative designs.
Kay Willis, from Fairmile Florist, Christchurch, received a Silver medal and said:
“I’m very happy with my award. It’s been two months of hard work and effort but I’m really pleased with the result. For my design I decided to focus on what I am good at and this design is a combination of all my best ideas.”
Siobhan Hughes from George Preston Florist, Newry, who is also an Interflora florist and won a Bronze medal, added:
“All of the entries are so amazing and so different; that’s what I love about this competition. It has taken me three days and a boat ride to be here and I couldn’t be happier with how my design has turned out.”
This year the following young Interflora florists won medals:
- Cooke, Charlotte, Hilarys Floral Design, Abergavenny – Silver
