IoH Annual National Tree Week Event

Title: ‘Heritage Trees, a guided walk and appreciation of our living heritage’
Venue: The Arboretum in the National Botanic Gardens
Time: 11.30-12.30 pm (meet outside the restaurant at 11.25 am)

Aubrey Fennell, tree expert and author of the recently published book ‘Heritage Trees of Ireland’, will lead this walk and talk through the arboretum. He will also focus on many aspect of his work for this splendid publication, which documents trees from all corners of the island of Ireland. All are welcome.

Ireland Final of the Young Horticulturist of the Year 2014

Over the last few months more than 2000 young horticulturists in Great Britain and Ireland have taken part in the local heats of The Institute of Horticulture Young Horticulturist of the Year (YHoY) 2014 competition. Within Ireland 166 people took part in the heats in February and the eight best performing young horticulturists will compete against each other in the Ireland Final on 26th of March at the National Botanic Gardens, Dublin. The event will take place at 13.30h and everybody is welcome to attend. The contestants this year are:

Stephen Walsh  – Waterford Institute of Technology/National Botanic Gardens
Leo Walsh         – National Botanic Gardens,Dublin
Eva Ziggiotto     – University College Dublin
Aoife Mc Mullin –  Dublin City University/National Botanic Gardens
Matthew Hughes – Clonakilty College, Co. Cork
Padraig Morrisey – Kildalton College, Co Kilkenny
Michael Dundee  – Greenmount College, Co. Antrim
Martha Meharg  –  Greenmount College, Co. Antrim

The winner of Ireland Final will represent Ireland in the Grand Final which will be held this year at the John Innes Centre (www.jic.ac.uk) in Norwich, England on 10th May 2014. The overall winner will win a travel bursary of £2000, which is sponsored by the Shropshire Horticultural Society.
