If you’re new to growing fruit and vegetables and would like the opportunity to win an electric car, here’s your chance. I was delighted to once again be invited to write the projects for this years Operation GIY Nation campaign, having written the original six projects in 2012 for GIY Ireland.

This year GIY have teamed up with Renault who will be sponsoring the programme and offering four lucky pioneers an electric car to drive throughout the four-month programme from May to August. But that’s not all. One of the lucky pioneers will get to keep their car which almost has me wishing I was starting again!!
What’s Operation GIY Nation all about?
Anyone can register for Operation GIY Nation and once you have, GIY will email you a copy of the monthly projects as a downloadable PDF along with growing instructions.
The projects have all been written to help beginners grow their own fruit or vegetables and with that in mind, can be grown in pots or directly into the soil, making them accessible for all. There’s even tips for children to help to get involved too. It’s free to sign up to Operation GIY Nation and although the list of equipment needed will cost a few euro, tips have been included on how to keep the prices down and of course, once you have the pots, seeds, plants or compost, you can use them again.
From all the entries, four pioneers will be chosen that everyone can follow on Facebook and twitter, enabling you to keep track of them as they share their experiences of growing their own food.

It was lovely to read that the O’Donoghue family, winners of last years Operation GIY Nation, were thrilled to be able to wean their baby onto nutritious, home-grown food as a result of this project. What a better way to start!

Dee Sewell – a horticulturalist and certified trainer who started Greenside Up in 2009 and teaches people how to grow vegetables. Dee specialises in working with community gardens but also offers workshops, allotment visits, consultations, horticultural therapy, afterschools clubs as well as local talks – she tailors her services to meet clients needs. In 2012 Dee launched a Seed Gift Collection containing varieties of vegetable and insect friendly flowers with the aim of getting more people growing. Dee’s blog was a finalist in the 2012 Ireland Blog Awards in the Eco/Green and Lifestyle Categories.
