Studies have shown that fresh flowers have the ability to induce happiness in people. According to Rutgers University researchers, getting a flower arrangement or gift bouquet has been found to instantly improve mood and create other positive emotions.
The positive effect of receiving flowers was recently experienced by an elderly British woman who was given a bouquet of blooms from a stranger.
The 90-year-old lady told the Fenland Citizen newspaper that she was shopping when she received the unexpected gift.
“I finished my shopping and was looking at the cut flowers,” the woman told the newspaper. “I decided not to buy any and as I was walking away, a young lady who had been standing near me came up with a gorgeous bunch of flowers. She said, ‘these are for you, here’s the receipt.’ I was totally shocked. When I asked why, she said ‘because you remind me of my nan.'”
The elderly woman, who did not want to reveal her name, said that the random act of kindness was so appreciated that it almost brought her to tears.
“Nothing like this has ever happened to me before and I’m very old,” she said.
