Visiting a loved one can be a very emotional and it can also be a calming experience. We arrive full of funny and sad little memories. Although they are not here with us, they will always be with us. I find visiting my own loved ones to be a lovely, quiet, peaceful time. I want to bring a token just to let them know they will always be in my heart. I would like to share with you just a few winter ideas on making your visit special.
-
Winter planted bowl: We usually associate planted arrangements with the summer as there is a large selection of flowering plants to choose from but winter plants can be just as pretty and last well on the grave. Beautiful flowering heathers, scented hyacinths, rich solanum berries, trailing ivy, all thrive in the winter and can create an eye catching design. Add some novelty items, like pretty bows, sparkly baubles for christmas to make sure your arrangement of plants catches the eyes up above. Here in Flowers Now, in Balbriggan we always keep a pretty selection of flowering winter plants. So just drop in.
-
Decorative Wreaths: We usually associate wreaths with christmas time. They can be just as beautiful at other times over the winter. Autumnal wreaths in oranges and russet colours can really brighten your loved ones final resting place. Include warm berries and fruit in your wreath to add interest and colour.
-
Flower Baskets: A basket teeming with flowers looks great at any time of the year. They can also be reused again with the addition of colourful plants. Try to stick with lower baskets as they will be less likely to get damaged in strong winds.
-
Storm Lantern: This is a particular favourite of mine for any winter graveside. I love to keep them simple. Plant up with beautiful scented hyacinth bulbs and watch them flourish over the coming weeks. Then as it approaches christmas why not replace with tall candles. They can then be lit on your visit to create a warming glow while you reminisce on times gone by.
We do not have to break the bank to show family and friends that we are still thinking of them. Winter is a great time for gathering berries, coloured leaves, acorns etc all of which look great in winter arrangements, so be creative and enjoy making something special for our special ones.
