Manicuring golf greens for Rory McIlroy, developing new medicines, unearthing the stories behind historical gardens or getting famous football pitches match-ready are just some of the exciting career paths horticulture has to offer local students says Agriculture Minister Michelle O’Neill.
And to help grow their interest in the varied and exciting range of opportunities horticulture has to offer, CAFRE has invited 450 pupils from 18 schools across the north, to get their hands dirty at a two-day “Grow Careers” event they are hosting hosting today and tomorrow, 23 and 24 June, at their Greenmount Campus.
“We want to demonstrate to our young students that horticulture is where science, art, design and business meet. It is creative, changes with the seasons and transforms where we live and work into happier and healthier places,” explained Minister O’Neill.
“With interactive indoor and outdoor activities this two day event will allow them to see the fantastic facilities at CAFRE including our golf course, floristry studio, walled garden, landscape gardening skills area and our new state-of-the-art grow building.
“We want to plant a seed in their imagination about what the diverse range of career opportunities open to them within horticulture. From food production and plant science, to conservation, landscape design and the positive power of plants – there is something for everyone at CAFRE,” the Minister added.
