The BBC has announced the launch of a new gardening show aimed at broadening the horticultural horizons of its viewers. Great British Garden Revival hopes to encourage people to move away from patios and standard lawns, towards adventurous flowers and rockeries, across an initial 10 episodes.
With the help of experts Monty Don and Charlie Dimmock, the new programme will offer viewers tips and ideas, as well as an insight into the UK’s “horticultural heritage”.
It is hoped the series will inspire people in the same way as the Great British Bake Off; a home BBC talent show which is worth £3.4 billion just three years on from its launch.
Each episode will be focussed towards an endangered aspect of gardening; including topiary, ornamental bedding and herbaceous borders.
The series sees Gardeners’ World presenter Chris Beardshaw campaign for a renaissance for ‘the stumpery’ in UK back gardens – a feature which was all the rage in the Victorian era, used to exhibit popular plants.
Lindsay Bradbury, a commissioning editor at the BBC, believes gardening is “one of Britain’s boom areas”.
She said the series will include “top tips” and “nostalgia”.
The first episode of the show will be screened on BBC Two on Monday, December 9.
