A man has tragically died after a machine collapsed on him at a Dunboyne concrete plant on Tuesday morning.
The 28-year-old, from Drogheda’s North Road area, was working on a machine at Kilsaran Concrete at Piercetown, Dunboyne, when it collapsed on him at 6.30am crushing him under its weight.
The man was taken to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown but was later pronounced dead.
Gardaí preserved the scene for Health and Safety Authority (HSA) investigators who examine all workplace-related deaths.
A spokesperson for the HSA would only confirm that it had received a call early on Tuesday 6th September, and that its investigation is ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
A statement from the Kilsaran plant said that employees were “devastated” by the tragedy and that their thoughts were with the man’s family and friends.
“At 7am this morning, an incident occurred at Kilsaran’s paving manufacturing site in Dunboyne, Co Meath, which resulted in the fatality of an employee.
“Kilsaran wishes to extend its sincerest sympathies to the family of the man and all those affected by the incident.
“The area has now been sealed off and Kilsaran personnel are co-operating with the authorities and emergency services. The cause of the incident has not been confirmed at this point and will be the subject of an ongoing investigation by the gardaí, HSA and relevant authorities,” the Kilsaran statement added.
Tom Tevlin, managing director of Kilsaran’s paving & walling division, said that staff at the facility were devastated by the death.
“It is with deep regret that we confirm a fatal accident has occurred at our paving manufacturing plant in Dunboyne. We are all devastated and shocked by what has happened, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the deceased at this time,” he said.
