What a fun time of the year. We are all starting to see our beautiful summer drifting away.. Getting darker earlier and turning on the lights in the morning. There is nothing worse than that squinting your eyes feeling in the morning when you know you have to leave the comfort of your own warm bed.
This is where halloween comes in. Something fun without the commercialism of Christmas. Where as a family you can dress up, eat lots of sugar and look as silly as possible with homemade games, that have been handed down from generation to generation. I love to dress up my children and my house. Let the fun n Balbriggan begin.
Porch Decorations: You can never go wrong with the classic pumpkin. I find a grouping of pumpkins of different sizes always makes for a better display. Go wild when it comes to creating that unique pumpkin face. Lanterns again grouped in different sizes and styles, preferably in the same colour, gives that warm glow of candlelight protected behind glass. Very important when there are so many small monsters wandering the streets. We don’t want any burnt sticky fingers on halloween night. Painted jam jars make great t-light holders. Wrap the top with twine or ribbon to suspend from porch, out of harms way. If you are feeling very creative. Secure lots of dried branches from the the eaves of your porch, these can be painted black for effect with the addition of glitter. Secure red led lights on the branches to create that eerie effect.
Door Decorations: Wreaths are always a popular feature on doors at Halloween but they can look equally impressive for Halloween. They can be very easily made by a quick trip out in your back garden. Grab any pieces of dead wood/ branches and bind with wire to create a ring. Then leave up to your own imagination for decoration. Acorns, rich russet coloured ribbon, berries, mini pumpkins/ gourds, old halloween decorations. You can have real fun with this and get the children involved. Always add the famous spider. They can very easily be created by spraying cotton wool black and adding black pipe cleaners for legs.
Hallway Decorations: If you have not scared away all of the little monsters at this point. You have one last chance to bribe them away. Pumpkins also make bowls for holding all of those precious goodies that will finally make those monsters leave. It is in the hallway that I like to have a little Adult decoration, my halloween treat. This is where I like to have a tall front facing arrangement, using contorted willow or any twisted branches you may have, addition of fruit with my flowers, oranges/mini pumpkins or apples all look very festive and create that warm look. Use berries from your garden and lots of nice rich coloured greens. A lot of plants are beginning to turn orange and red and look great in arrangements.
Fun in the Garden: I love the idea of creating a talking point in the garden at halloween. Especially the ones that cost nothing to create. I am going to share one with you this year that I will definitely be using myself. All you need is a jumper, trousers, pair of socks and shoes. Belonging to your child or children. Make sure these are old items of clothes. Stuff them with material, old sheets, whatever is to hand. Place a long stick into the ground to secure. Turn the jumper upside down with trousers attached and shoes in place. With a sign beside saying I have grounded my children this Halloween. This I love. So if anyone is passing Stamullen it will be pride of place in my garden.
