Gardens have the ability to soothe many people, but recently, experts have discovered ways to design gardens to especially benefit Alzheimer’s patients, the Chicago Tribune reports.
The DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center in Illinois recently made headlines for the garden it designed on its facility for the patients in its Alzheimer’s wing. The garden features fragrant flowers, a variety of trees and bushes, and a fountain – stimulating all the senses of the Alzheimer’s patients, who suffer from severe damage to cognitive abilities. Deb Greiner, director of Alzheimer’s services at the center, told the news source that the garden reminds residents of past hobbies and makes them feel close to home.
The Alzheimer’s Association also sells an Alzheimer’s Awareness Garden set, allowing people to support the cause financially while spreading awareness visually with the 10 plants included.
Flowers have the ability to cheer up many people, which is why they are so often given as a gift when someone is sick or grieving. Online florists can deliver flowers to Alzheimer’s patients at home or in the hospital to simulate the benefits of an Alzheimer’s garden.
