By Claire Murphy. A PROMINENT British food critic has had jars of Irish homemade jam confiscated by anti-terrorism police at Dublin Airport. Award-winning food writer James Crowden found himself in a sticky situation in Dublin Airport when police pounced.
Regarded as one of Britain’s finest food and drink reviewers, Mr Crowden had been invited here by Bord Bia to address a meeting of apple-growers and cider-makers in Drogheda. But the Christmas presents he had bought for his father were taken off him at the airport on his way home to Bristol.
Mr Crowden told the Herald that three pots of “very reputable homemade jam” were confiscated. “I just wondered if they used a controlled explosion to destroy it or took it home,” he joked. Now Dublin solicitor Pol O Murchu has demanded a full explanation for the actions.
“It seems ironic that Mr Crowden, who was invited over by Bord Bia to give advice on how to boost the Irish rural economy, should be penalised in this way,” Mr O Murchu said. Mr Crowden had visited the home of his ancestors, Granard in Longford while discussing the future of artisan cider-making in the country. It was here he bought the three jars of apricot, plum and blackberry jam in the Grevill Arms.
Dublin Airport Authority did not respond to queries at the time of going to print.
