Kitty Scully is the Head Kitchen Gardener here at Airfield Estate where she manages the New Food Gardens.
Kitty has worked on organic small holdings around the world and has a diploma in Organic Horticulture Sustainable Living as well as achieving a first class honours MSc in Organic Horticulture. Kitty is well known for her RTE 1 series, “How to Create a Garden”,and also writes a weekly vegetable gardening column for the Irish Examiner. Along with the whole gardening team she enjoys sharing her passion and commitment to the production and consumption of local, seasonal home grown food.
Following on from the popular sold out Spring Gardening Workshop Series, Kitty will be hosting a range of Autumn Gardening Workshops that are both fun and practical. We have three great workshops to choose from Great Things in Store, Putting the Beds to Bed and All about Alliums.
Please note: Hands on practical outdoor workshops which involve outdoor activities so please come with appropriate waterproof gear and footwear.

Putting the Beds to Bed
Autumn has arrived and you may be wondering what to do with all those empty hard working vegetable beds? Wonder no more, just join Airfield’s Head Kitchen Gardener Kitty Scully for a hands-on workshop on putting the garden to rest for the winter. From mulching to sowing green manures and planning crop rotations, there are lots of valuable autumn ground preparation practices and jobs that may just determine the success of your garden next year. They will certainly help to reduce the amount of hours needed to work soil next spring. October does not cry ‘curtains down’ on the vegetable patch but simply should be viewed as the beginning of next year’s growing season.

All about Alliums
Join Airfield’s Head Kitchen Gardener Kitty Scully to find out everything you need to know about planting, growing, harvesting, storing and cooking with alliums. Would you believe that there are over 700 different varieties of allium, ranging from ornamental plants grown for their striking spherical flower heads to edible crops including chives, garlic, shallots, onions and leeks. On the whole, alliums are a straightforward family to grow and in this workshop you will pick up plenty of allium pointers and a few recipes and medicinal tips as well.
