GOAL’s Damascus Courtyard – War and Peace symbolises some of the devastation visited upon the Syrian people, their identity, history and their culture over the past five years. Inspired by the traditional courtyard gardens of Damascus, the space is divided into two halves; one representing Syria in peacetime; the other representing Syria today, a land in a time of war.
Unlike most show gardens, which only last for the five days of the festival, Bloom is merely an opening chapter for the Damascus Courtyard. Elements of the garden will be used to complete a fully-functioning Damascus Courtyard for Syrian refugees at the reception centre in Monasterevin, Co. Kildare. Commissioned by Kildare Volunteer Centre, this garden, which Brian has already started to build, will offer a reflective space for Syrians and serve as a permanent emotional and physical connection to their homeland.
