The UCD garden allows visitors to walk with plants through half a billion years of plant evolutionary history. The show garden tells the story of plants moving from water onto land, making land suitable for animals which followed later.
The garden is divided into five sections, beginning with ‘Before Land Plants’, followed by four key innovations in land plant evolution; development of plant cuticle, vascular system, seed and flower. Following Bloom, the garden will be reconstructed as a permanent outdoor classroom in the grounds of UCD, where it will be used to teach plant evolution and the diversity of plant life on Earth.
DR. CAROLINE ELLIOTT-KINGSTON & NICOLA HAINES.
Dr. Caroline Elliott-Kingston – Caroline studied Horticulture at the National Botanic Gardens, followed by a degree in Botany at UCD. She completed her PhD in the evolution of stomata (plant breathing pores) under various simulated past atmospheric CO2 and O2 concentrations in order to understand how plants coped with past climate change.
