LAMA Community and Council Awards 2015 where held on 24th January. These Awards highlight and recognise community and councils together, bringing national recognition to projects and developments that may otherwise go unrecognised.
Cavan Burren Park is jointly managed by Coillte and Cavan County Council who have been working together to deliver local tourism and recreation facilities in the region. Cavan Burren Park is one of the finest integrated prehistoric landscapes in Ireland with fine examples of megalithic tombs, stone walls, ancient rock art, glacial erratics and pre-bog walls.
According to Bill Murphy Head of Recreation Coillte: “Coillte have long appreciated the uniqueness of the Burren. We were delighted to form a partnership with the local community and Cavan County council. In a national context we regard the Burren as flagship site.”
Located within the UNESCO designated Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark, Cavan Burren is recognised to have an exceptional archaeological heritage with over 80 monuments, ancient hut sites and field systems that survive from prehistoric times. A newly developed interpretative centre, car park, four new walking trails including one multi-use access trail and associated trail interpretation are added benefits for local tourism.
According to Eoin Doyle Director of Services “the Burren project is a unique archaeological and geological site. For many years Jim Nolan and people of Blacklion have been researching the site and promoting its importance. Great credit must be given to Bill Murphy and his colleagues in Coillte for prioritising the Burren and working in partnership with the council and the community.
