That time of year again is fast approaching. A time to reflect on the year gone by. A quiet time. A time to meet up with loved ones and remember family and friends that are dear to us. We all know, love and miss someone, and as our lives get busier we do not always get the chance to stop and remember, the fun or love they brought to our lives.
The blessings of the graves is just that, the time we need to reflect and stop.
This year the blessings of the graves here in Balbriggan is on Sunday 27 th of July at 4.00pm. In Balrothery a little earlier, Sunday 22 nd of June at 4.00 pm. It is always a busy time for florists. We find it important to take due care in creating something special for those most important loved ones, that are missed but never forgotton.
There are always arrangements that are popular every year. That round shaped posy, the diamond shaped funeral spray or the more traditional round ring wreath. Whatever your preference give your local florist as much details as you can, so that they can cater your arrangement to suit the individual. Here at Flowers Now in Balbriggan, I recently had a request for a client, who’s loved one liked the smurfs. I incorporated blue roses and blue eryngium into their arrangement to create that uniqueness they were looking for. Always order in advance from your florist so to avoid disappointment in obtaining a particular plant or flower.
- Trough Basket: This is an arrangement I really like here myself for the blessings of the graves. I find these particularly pretty and they are also great to add plants to afterwards when the flowers have gone. Three nice sized flowering plants will usually fill this basket and if you have a lovely bow or butterfly addition in your basket they can be re added.
- A lit Candle: on a grave can create a warm atmosphere, placed inside a storm lantern to protect from the wind. The glass storm vase can then be used to place your cut flowers in, if you wish something different.
- A Coloured Watering Can: is a pretty addition to any grave. This can be planted up or add cut flowers to it. Most local florists will happily allow you to bring back these items to be re planted. The older plants can also be planted into the grave and you have a watering can to water them.
- Wellington Boots: your loved one may have been a keen gardener. You could use their gardening boots, paint them in a bright colours, or if they followed any club their club colours. A few flowering plants, with maybe an ivy to create that draping effect. This is also a great idea for childrens graves as they can be brightly painted, with the sun, moon, kites, stars etc.
- Windmills: It is always nice to create movement as it attracts your attention. This can also be done with balloons. Another nice addition to a childrens grave. Balloons are also a great way to mark a loved ones birthday.
There is just one important rule to follow for the blessings of the graves and that is to know your loved one. Choose something that reminds you of an important event in their lives. Something that made their face light up. Use this idea to create something special that makes you both smile on this important day.
