Using biotechnology to fight pollution is the challenge for the EU MOSSCLONE research project in which Irish SME T.E Laboratories Ltd is a partner. Under the spotlight is a specific kind of moss which a team of biologists is growing in a controlled environment.
Mosses are especially well suited as bio-indicators for airborne contaminants because they have no roots and a very high surface-to-mass ratio.
Mark Bowkett, Managing Director of T.E. Laboratories explains the benefit his SME has gained from being a partner in this project: “The project gives our laboratory access to emerging Environmental monitoring technologies that requires a multi-disciplinary consortium to develop. Being part of framework projects allows us to grow our capabilities and services.”
