A young gardener has beaten off competition from hundreds of people to win a place on a ground breaking garden training programme. Jordan Twivey, 20, will put his horticulture knowledge to the test at the Homebase Garden Academy. This is a pioneering scheme set up between Homebase and Adam Frost – designer of five RHS Chelsea Flower Show Gold medal-winning gardens.
The duo decided to team up to help raise the profile of gardening as a career amid concerns there is a shortage of young, skilled gardeners in the UK. Recent research by the Royal Horticultural Society shows that 90% of horticultural businesses feel that the profession of horticulture lacks appeal, while over 70% admit they struggle to fill skilled vacancies.
“I’m thrilled to be given the opportunity to show people how passionate I am about the outdoors,” said Jordan.
“I’ve always loved being outdoors, and can remember as a child helping my parents turn their drive way into a blooming front garden.”
As part of the reward, he will also get the chance to help Adam Frost build The Homebase Garden ‘Time to Reflect’ at next year’s RHS Chelsea Flower show.
