Attractive Brown Grass – Gareth Austin

Carex buchanii is an attractive brown evergreen grass. Growing to around 2′ in height this ornamental grass is ideal for containers and pots and also for planting in grass beds and for giving contrast alongside broadleaved plants.

The foliage is unusual brown in colour and is retained all year. Maintenance is very low, trim back if needed, remove old flower stems as they pass apart from that theres not much else to do.

I think this ornamental grass works best in a container, the foliage is fine and attractive to the touch, I don’t think it works well as a mass-planting, the shape of the grass doesn’t lead itself to en-masse planting. For other attractive ornamental grasses see here
