An education-based battery recycling campaign aimed at preschool children run jointly by European Recycling Platform (ERP) and Early Childhood Ireland has rewarded a small preschool in Limerick for collecting the most number of batteries for recycling.
Children at the Caroline O’Dowd Montessori Preschool in Crecora in Limerick collected 385kg of used batteries. With just 11 children in attendance, the they collected more than their own weight in batteries at 32.9kg per child. They won an ERP recycling party, complete with magic and puppet show, balloon modelling and face paint, as well as a trophy and a voucher to the value of €250.
This campaign is part of an ongoing commitment from ERP and Early Childhood Ireland to put recycling and sustainability at the heart of the preschool curriculum.
According to the organisers, it has achieved great support in its first year and has gone a long way towards educating a younger audience to recycle through fun and engaging activities, as well as encouraging the 90pc of preschools that had never before recycled to do so.
“I wish to commend Early Childhood Ireland and ERP on this superb initiative, which recognises that efforts to encourage recycling and positive behaviour can be assisted by starting with the early years,” said Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Frances Fitzgerald TD.
“I also wish to congratulate the children and staff of the Caroline O’Dowd Montessori Preschool in Limerick on collecting the most number of batteries for recycling.”
