A community orchard is being developed at Lees Road Sports & Amenity Park in Ennis. 14 apple, plum and pear trees will be planted in a green area adjacent to the facility’s public Carpark as part of National Tree Week 2013 . The project is being hosted by Active Ennis Sports and Leisure Facilities, and supported by Wetlands Systems Ltd. and the Irish Seed Savers Association under the Garden of Eden Project.
Active Ennis General Manager, Tim Forde said: “We are delighted to be participating in National Tree Week and believe that this community orchard will complement the existing 30 acres of woodland at Lees Road Sports & Amenity Park. The types of fruit trees being planted are in keeping with the surrounding mature, native trees.”
Mr. Forde noted that the Orchard planting ceremony was also in keeping with this year’s National Tree Week theme of “A Feast of Trees”, with a particular emphasis on planting trees that provide a food source for humans, birds, bees and other wildlife.
The Mayor of Ennis Councillor Peter Considine will be in attendance at the tree planting ceremony today (March 6th) at 12pm.
Active Ennis Sports and Leisure Facilities include Lees Road Sports and Amenity Park, Ennis Leisure Complex, Tim Smyth Park, Cloughleigh Astroturf, Gleninagh Pitch, Coote Park, and the town’s playgrounds.
