Speaking at the event today Aidan Cotter, CEO, Bord Bia said “Now in its sixth year, Bloom continues to evolve and grow with our changing times. It is a showcase of the indigenous talent, creativity and integrity that characterises Irish food and horticulture and its capacity to contribute to our economic well-being.”

Gary Graham, Bord Bia’s Bloom Show Manager added “This year the horticultural industry has been severely tested by poor weather conditions and difficult economic circumstances yet we have managed to achieve 27 stunning show gardens and over 40 magnificent horticultural displays which proves the strength of Bloom and its importance to businesses. We are really delighted with the success of this year’s show and plans are already underway for Bloom 2013 which will be one of the signature events for “The Gathering Ireland 2013”.

A total of 81 medals were awarded on the first day of the show to garden designers, nurseries and floral artists by the international judging panel. The overall large garden category award went to Jane McCorkell of Kilsallaghan, Co. Meath for her Bord na Mona Growise ‘My Garden’ design. Yesterday, Deirdre Pender from Carlow received the Designers Choice award for her garden Machnamh/ Reflection. Each year the award is chosen by the Bloom show-garden designers who vote for their favourite garden and is a much sought after accolade.

The final award of Bloom 2012, the People’s Choice award, was today presented to Erika Reeves from Carrick-on-Suir, Tipperary for her “The Cystic Fibrosis Ireland” garden. The winner of this coveted award is voted for by visitors to the show over the 5 days.
