Ireland’s National Biodiversity Indicators Released

 The National Biodiversity Data Centre has released the first set of National Biodiversity Indicators, designed to summarise trends in the health of our species, landscapes and seascapes. They also track broad changes in Irish society’s relationships with wildlife.

Strategic Planning is Needed to Address Ireland's Climate Challenges

 The EPA has today published a new research No. 159 "Ensemble of regional climate model projections for Ireland" on high resolution regional climate modelling projections for Ireland. 

The report reveals how key features of Ireland’s climate, including the average temperature, rainfall and the types of storms, are projected to change over the coming decades.

Journal of an Irish Garden is a collection of columnist and plantsperson Rachel Darlington's articles in the Irish Garden magazine from 2007 to 2015. It details her development from amateur gardener to owner of a garden open to the public.

New Locally-Led Burren Programme Opens

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD, has opened the new Burren Programme for applications from interested farmers. The new scheme is one of the flagship projects to be supported under the proposed new Locally-Led Measure for the Rural Development Programme 2014 – 2020.

An Irish Garden by Jane Powers Wins UK Award

 

When I was in art college studying woven textiles, I won the Lillias Mitchell award for hand-spinning. I got a nice letter and a small cheque. That was decades ago, and I never won anything after that except for two raffle prizes.

Two New Swatches Added to the Ireland’s Biodiversity Suite!

 

We’re delighted to introduce two new swatches to our ‘Ireland’s Biodiversity’ suite: ‘Ireland’s Ladybirds’ and ‘Trees & Shrubs’.

These swatches are pocket-sized, field-friendly, beautifully illustrated guides providing information on the identification of Ireland’s Biodiversity. Species are grouped by colour to highlight key identification features.

Bell and Foster Welcome Announcement of New UNESCO Destination for Northern Ireland

Marble Arch Caves UNESCO Global Geopark is now one of 120 such sites across the globe and sits alongside the Giant's Causeway World Heritage Site as the second of only two UNESCO designated sites in Northern Ireland. The status is awarded in recognition of an area's internationally important rocks and landscapes and how they are used for sustainable tourism.

Can We Save the Pollinators of Ireland?

 

The year 2015 was a momentous one for the pollinators when Biodiversity Ireland brought together a diverse range of people to begin a plan of action they hope will save these important insects. Sixty eight organisations from across the island, including the Community Garden Network who I represented, agreed they would help to carry out five plans of action over the coming years in a 2015-2020 Pollinator Plan.

Geopark shortlisted for National Geographic World Legacy Award

 

The Geopark, which was designated as a UNESCO site following a vote at the UNESCO General Conference in Paris, has been shortlisted in the Destination Leadership category of The National Geographic World Legacy Awards alongside Destination Røros (Norway) and Travel Oregon (United States).

EU Funding for €5.4m Project for Restoration of Ireland’s Active Raised Bogs

The Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys TD, has today (Monday) welcomed the approval by the European Commission of a new project worth over €5.4 million for the restoration of Active Raised Bog in Ireland’s Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Network.

 The Marble Arch Caves Geopark has officially been designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark.  Part of the Marble Arch Caves UNESCO Global Geopark is the Cavan Burren Park, which is managed by Coillte in association with Cavan Co Co.

Distinguished Recorder Award 2015

The National Biodiversity Data Centre is delighted to announce that Pádraig Whooley will be awarded the Distinguished Recorder Award for 2015 at a special awards ceremony at Ely House, Ely Place, Dublin 2 at 11.30am on Friday, 27th November. The award will be made in recognition to the outstanding contributions Pádraig has made to biological recording in Ireland.
