Protecting Ireland’s Pollinators

‘Globally, bees are the most important pollinators because they visit flowers to collect pollen for their larvae, as well as feeding exclusively on the nectar of flowers as adults. Hence, the entire life-cycle of bees is dependent on interactions with flowering plants’, All Ireland Pollinator Plan 2015 -2020.

Bloom was launched by Bord Bia in 2007 primarily as a promotional vehicle for horticulture; providing a showcase for garden plants, garden design, construction, horticulture, and gardening as a hobby. Based on similar successful formats such as the RHS Chelsea Flower Shows and RHS Hampton Court Palace shows, Bloom has numerous highly creative gardens and plant displays which are used to inspire and excite the public about gardening and garden design.

Garden Pests: Lupin Aphid, Macrosiphum albifrons

When I was about 5 or 6, one of the first things I thought myself to do was to get Geraniums to produce roots by simply placing them in a saucer of water. My pocket money, far better spent on compost (and football stickers) once I'd figured that technique out and moved onto propagating Cacti, that in mind, could never afford me the luxury of purchasing rooting powder.

The debacle that is the relicensing of glyphosate in the EU continues to roll on towards the June 15th deadline when its current authorisation runs out. Just last week, the European Parliament made recommendations to the Commission (the licensing authority) that the licensing period be reduced from 15 years to just 7 and for the herbicide to be only available for professional use.

Chickpeas and Temples

16 Natural Alternatives to Herbicide Use

As I sat in a building and watched someone spray a herbicide outside the window, apart from the immediate sense of disappointment, the first thing I noticed was that they weren’t wearing any protection. Judging by the way they were emptying the liquid into the spray bottle, quite possibly they hadn’t paid any heed to the recommended dilution either. I asked if it was Roundup® and whether they had a mask and gloves. The response was “yep it is”, and “ah sure”…
