A session led by Professor Peadar Kirby places the everyday issues of sustainability and resilience that the Cloughjordan ecovillage seeks to model, into the wider global context of the need to transition towards a low-carbon society by around 2050 to avoid what scientists increasingly warn could otherwise result in catastrophic consequences for human livelihoods. This seminar will examine how we might address these challenges, at a local, national and global level, and the options facing us in doing this. It points to the huge uncertainty facing humankind yet highlights the positive benefits that lie in store if we can make the transition in a planned and ordered way.
