Champion Christmas Tree Grower Urges People to ‘Love a Real Tree’ this Christmas

Wicklow grower, Christy Kavanagh, has been crowned the Christmas Tree Grower Supreme Champion 2014 in the national Christmas tree growing competition. This is the fifth time that Christy has received the accolade for his Nordmann Fir range in the annual competition organized by the Christmas Tree Growers Association. As an experienced and avid grower, he is enthusiastic about the benefits real Christmas Trees bring to the celebrations, noting that the Nordmann Fir is the most popular type of tree, accounting for 75% of trees sold in Ireland.

Girley Tree Planting

Our last planting day in Girley Bog was a huge success, with 500 trees planted. We then had a number of days help from volunteer Google staff, who helped us get lots more trees in the ground. We would love to have another successful planting event this November to continue with this great progress on one of our newest sites.

Growing and Re-Potting Orchids Demonstration

Brendan Sayers, Glasshouse Foreman at the N.B.G. and well-know orchid specialist will give a demonstration on growing and re-potting orchids.

This demonstration is open to the public and numbers must be limited.
Cost €15p/p. Cheques made payable to Irish Orchid Society to be received before January 30th 2015.

Pumpkin Art – Time For Something Different? - Dee Sewell

It never occurred to me to decorate a pumpkin at Halloween any other way than carving it, but Melissa from the Empress of Dirt blog recently published a post calling for entries to a pumpkin decorating competition where pumpkins are embellished rather than sculptured and it seems such a great idea.

Woodland Walk and Seed Collection

On this woodland walk we will be looking at the biodiversity found in our Ardan Woodland. At the Native Woodland Trust we like to plant trees from seeds collected on our own sites and so during the walk we would like to collect as many hazel nuts as possible so that we can grow some hazel seedlings for future planting.

RHSI Diarmuid Gavin Talk in Dublin

The Royal Horticultural Society of Ireland are delighted to present a gardening talk given by world-renowned Irish garden designer, Diarmuid Gavin. Diarmuid, who needs no introduction, will be talking about 'Creating Gardens'. It will take place in Wesley House, Leeson Park, Dublin 6 on Wednesday 15th October at 7.30pm. All are welcome. Art Exhibition at Mount Venus Nursery

27th & 28th September 2014 11am - 7pm Opening Friday 7pm. An Art Form inspired by observation in Nature Sculpture, Installations, Glass, Photography and Prints exhibited by a group of artists creating an outdoor gallery space within the walls of the nursery.

Experience Unique Events at this Year's European Heritage Open Days Weekend Durkan

Environment Minister Mark H Durkan recently invited the public to enjoy European Heritage Open Days (EHOD) weekend on 13 and 14 September. Over 400 properties and events of cultural and historical interest will be open to the public, free of charge, across Northern Ireland.

Sliabh Aughty Furnace Festival

Sliabh Aughty Furnace Festival will take place at Mountshannon, Co. Clare on the 20th and 21st of September next. On Saturday, there's a variety of attractions planned, including blacksmithing, sword fighting demonstrations and 17th century games, as well as high quality talks by local historians and academic speakers. On Sunday, we are guiding a tour of the most important monuments.

Santa Arrives by Helicopter at Arboretum

Santa will be arriving by helicopter from Lapland to say sorry to all the kids and parents and will be giving out delicious free hot chocolate to celebrate Christmas.

Gracedieu Tree Planting

Located on the banks of the River Suir our Gracedieu Reserve is a beautiful and relaxing place to spend the day. We have made great progress on this Waterford Reserve with a constant stream of volunteers willing to help and so we would love to see the same enthusiasm for this planting day. Appropriate footwear, clothing and lunch/water are advised. This event is weather dependent.

Encounters With Biodiversity: A Photo-Story Competition

The National Biodiversity Data Centre is running a photo-story competition 'Encounters with biodiversity' to profile aspects of Ireland's biodiversity and to provide a platform for photographers and naturalists to highlight their special interest. Entrants are invited to submit an original photograph with accompanying text (no more than 250 words) to describe the photograph and/or scene,

Cliffs and Burren Make 100 Great Geosites List

The Geological Society of London has included The Burren and the Cliffs of Moher among the UK and Ireland's 100 Great Geosites. The announcement was made at the end of a seven month project to highlight the UK and Ireland's unique geological heritage.

Seed Sowing

After our seed collection day in Ardan, a seed sowing day is planned. On this day we will plant the acorns and hazel nuts that were collected so that they can be stored in our nursery as they grow. Once they have grown big enough, the saplings will then be planted back on to our reserves.

Opening of New TCD Garden and Visit to the Herbarium by HRH Princess Maha Chakra Sirindhorn

The Department of Botany was honoured that HRH Princess Maha Chakra Sirindhorn opened a new Garden in the newly formed square outside the Botany Building on Saturday September 6th. The square was formed and the garden developed following the demolition of the 'temporary' huts that have stood there for many decades.
