Gracedieu Volunteer Day

Over the last few months our Gracedieu site will have had much work carried out. On this volunteer day we will be checking on all of the work completed so far and carrying out any maintenance required, such as widening paths, fixing fence posts and clearing grass from inside tree guards so that our trees can get maximum light.

This year's SuperValu TidyTowns awards for the Midlands & East region were presented recently, Wednesday 3rd December, at a prize-giving ceremony in the Community Hall, Moynalty, Co. Meath. SuperValu TidyTowns winners were presented with their awards by Damien English T.D., Minister for Skills, Research and Innovation, and Paul Rice, Regional Manager, SuperValu, proud sponsors of the competition. Also joining the Minister on stage was Colm Breheny, Client Services Manager Fáilte Ireland.

Girley Tree Planting

Our last planting day in Girley Bog was a huge success, with 500 trees planted. We then had a number of days help from volunteer Google staff, who helped us get lots more trees in the ground. We would love to have another successful planting event this November to continue with this great progress on one of our newest sites.

The Vulnerability of Bees to Agrichemicals is Good Reason to Farm Organically - Trevor Sargent

One of the many fringe events during the Wexford Opera Festival this year was a screening of the Irish made film 'Colony' about the dramatic decline of honey bee numbers. The film features beekeepers Lance and Victor Seppi from Pixley, California, but the crisis is a global one.

Hen Harriers Under Forestry Threat

Conservation groups in Ireland call for support for farmers in Hen Harrier areas and are warning of the dangers planting trees within its protected areas. Hen Harrier has become part of a media storm in Ireland. Attempts to portray the species as a threat to farming livelihoods have been stymied by the fact that it is apparent that the interests and livelihoods of many farming communities are actually more compatible with Hen Harrier conservation than recent media reports indicate.

SEAI Launch Bigger and Better One Good Idea Project

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) marked the launch of the One Good Idea Project for 2014/15 by announcing an exciting new partnership with AIB, which will help the scheme reach more students and expand the programme to primary schools for the first time. The aim of the project is to increase students' understanding of energy efficiency and climate change by encouraging them to take individual and collective responsibility for tackling these important issues.
