Weekend in the Hills May 2015

This event, formally known as Weekend in the Woods, is an opportunity for folk to immerse themselves in their roots. Over two days, students learn the basic skills in their chosen course.

Plastic-Bottle Greenhouse by Dublin Children

A greenhouse assembled using 1,000 plastic bottles recycled by Panda customers and built by children from the South West Inner City Network (SWICN) is being entered into Eco-Unesco's Young Environmentalist Award.

Heritage Council Opens Its Community Grant Scheme 2015

The Heritage Council intends to allocate the sum of €600,000 to its Community-based Heritage Grants Scheme in 2015. Applications must be submitted using our online application system before 5.00pm on Friday 20 March 2015. See www.heritagecouncil.ie/grants/ for all the details.

Blessington Wildlife Walk

Our Blessington site is a great place to take a walk and look for signs of wildlife. Lots of species have been spotted here over the years. While this walk does not guarantee sightings of wildlife we will look for signs of their presence and explore the different habitats found on our site. This event is weather dependent. This event is free for members with a suggested donation of €4 for non-members.

Minister Encourages Young People to Become More Environmentally Aware on World Wetlands Day

The Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys TD, is encouraging young people to become more environmentally aware on World Wetlands Day, a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about the importance of protecting our wetlands. A month-long Global Photo Contest open to 15-24 year olds starts today [2/2/15] aimed at encouraging young people to visit their local wetland.

Wild Bees Threatened by Virus from Commercial Bees

Research just published shows there is a new threat to our wild bee populations.
Not only are Europe's bees at risk from environmental pollutants and habitat loss, but it now appears their commercial cousins are capable of spreading deadly viruses to the community of wild pollinators.

World's Biggest Garden Wildlife Survey On Its Way!

The RSPB's annual Big Garden Birdwatch is back on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 January 2015, giving people across Wales the chance to be part of the world's biggest wildlife survey. Around half a million people across the UK took part in 2014 – with over 22,500 taking part from Wales. RSPB Cymru is urging more people of Wales to take part this year, making it bigger and better!

Community Gardens Connecting in Galway - Greenside Up

When people connect great things can happen and community gardens are no exception. On the 8th March community gardeners from Ireland and Northern Ireland will be meeting in County Galway to help and support one another to gain more from this form of group gardening. The following gives an insight into the network as well as Doorus Community Orchard, the location of our March networking event.

Restoration: Bringing the Bogs Back to Life

Intact bogs are living and breathing ecosystems and are fast becoming recognised as 'Ireland's rainforests' locking up to 1,566 million tonnes of carbon when properly functioning. However once a bog is drained this carbon sequestration function is reversed and the bog itself begins to die. Slowly the tide is turning in the bogs favour as we restore them and bring them back to life.

Annual Seed Share 2015

On 1st March 2015 we will be having our annual Seed Share. Come share and swop your seeds. Bring your friends and family and enjoy a walk on our 20 acres of Orchards and Woodlands. On the day we will have a selected menu in our cafe and Cob Pizza Oven.

Bord Na Móna Biodiversity Action Plan Review Day 2014

On 2 February 2015 over 120 ecologists, academics, Bord na Móna staff, community representatives, EPA staff and nature conservation champions came together for the latest review of the Bord na Móna Biodiversity Action Plan 2010-2015. The review was held in Roscommon – with a morning seminar session and an afternoon field trip based on the work that the Ecology Team has focused on in the past year.

50 Schools from all over Ireland have been shortlisted to put their campaigns into action as part of the One Good Idea project. The One Good Idea competition aims to inspire people to make small lifestyle changes to use energy more efficiently and help tackle climate change.

Girley Bog Volunteer Day

Over the last year we have noticed a huge variety of wildflowers in one patch of our Girley Bog site. For this reason we have decided to fence off most of this area to maintain as a wildflower area among our trees.
