The Rare & Special Plant Fair 2015 In Association With Bord Bia

Spring has sprung and summer is on the way. Green fingered gardeners of all ages are encouraged to visit Airfield Dundrum on Sunday May 10th from 10am to 5pm, when it will play host to The Rare & Special Plant Fair 2015.

Over 250 Attend Reforestation Events in Kilkenny and Clare

Teagasc, in association with Coillte, the Society of Irish Foresters and the Forest Service, Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine, recently held three very successful events focusing on best practice in relation to reforestation after clearfell.

Forest Service Irish Forestry Awards - RDS

The Irish Forestry Awards recognise and reward farmers and woodland owners who are employing the principles of Climate-Smart Agriculture on their properties including: sound commercial management, environmental protection and bio diversity.

Launch of 2015 Supervalu Tidytowns Competition

EU Recycling and Composting Rate Reaches 43%

A record 43% of municipal waste was either recycled or composted in the EU in 2013, according to the latest Eurostat figures published on Thursday. Although the share of recycled waste reached 28%, 31% of waste was still landfilled and 26% incinerated.

Floral Discoveries in Woods - David Corscadden

With the fantastic weather we have been having lately it has finally began to feel like summer and I for one could not be more happy. Spring is a fantastic time to get out and really appreciate nature as it begins to wake from its slumber. While many people reserve visits to to parks and woods for the summer time, when you can enjoy a picnic in the warmth, I love a visit to my local woods to explore and seek out plants.

I wrote a post last year that looked at five ways we can help bees but since then I've taken beginners lessons in beekeeping. One of the lectures was about foraging and as a gardener I was curious what I could plant in my garden that bees would like to feast upon.

Top Marks - 100% Record As Every School An Eco-School-Durkan

The 20th Anniversary of Eco-Schools in Northern Ireland was marked at a special celebration. Speaking at the event at Meadowbank Arena, Magherafelt, Environment Minister Mark H Durkan praised the young people and their teachers for driving forward great work for the Environment.

Ministers Hayes and Humphreys Publish Deer Management Report and Launch Irish Deer Management Forum

Tom Hayes T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and Heather Humphreys T.D., Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht recently (4 March 2015) published the report Deer Management in Ireland – A Framework for Action and also announced the membership of theDeer Management Forum.

BBC Radio 4's Gardeners' Question Time Visits Garden Show!

On Friday 8th May, BBC Radio 4's Gardeners' Question Time will be recording from Allianz Garden Show Ireland at Antrim Castle Gardens! So bring along your questions and put them to the celebrated panel of gardening experts. The team is made up of organic gardening guru Bob Flowerdew, plantsman and horticulturalist Matthew Biggs, and botanist James Wong with Eric Robson in the chair.

A Game Menu For Garden Show

For over a decade, Northern Ireland's premiere gardening event, Allianz Garden Show Ireland has been championing local food producers from all over the country. Recently, organisers revealed a game menu featuring lobster burgers and wild game as the Show teams up with Food NI for this year's event, which runs 8-10 May in Antrim Castle Gardens.

One In 10 EU Wild Bee Species Faces Extinction

Almost one in ten wild bee species in the EU faces extinction, mainly due to intensifying agriculture, research funded by the European Commission shows. About 9.1% of wild bee species across the EU face extinction in the near future, while another 5.4% are likely to become threatened, according to a study by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The Rare and Special Plant Fair

The Rare and Special Plant Fair was established in 2001 with the assistance of BordBia, to ensure that the gardening public has an opportunity to purchase rare and difficult to source plants, while at the same time visit a garden of note that they may not otherwise visit.

Facilitating Flourishing Communities

22 April 2015 | Cost €70 for funded participants, €35 if un-funded or active in this area and €20 for Cultivate or Ecovillage members. There are two bursary placements available for low income or job seekers who would benefit from attending.

Sowing Seeds for Local Schools

Allianz Garden Show Ireland was sowing the seeds for future gardeners from Schools all over Northern Ireland recently as it launched its Schools Challenges for the 2015 event which takes place in Antrim Castle Gardens from 8-10 May, 2015.

Timber 2015 Irish Forestry, Woodland and Bio Energy Show

TIMBER 2015!
Ireland's national & largest specialist bi-annual forestry show with bio energy sector, is now in its third year. Minister Show Opening: The Show will be opened 'officially' at 12 noon on Saturday 9 May by Minister Tom Hayes, Minister of State for the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
