Hayes Launches Native Woodland Conservation Scheme

Tom Hayes, T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with responsibility for forestry, launched the Native Woodland Conservation Scheme during his visit to the National Ploughing Championships in Ratheniska, Stradbally, Co. Laois. Funding is provided under the Scheme to restore Ireland's native woodlands, which are rich complex ecosystems and an invaluable part of Ireland’s natural heritage.

Planet's Total Tree Cover Down 46% Since Arrival of Humans

Ireland has lowest level of forest cover in Europe at 11%, says State forestry firm Coillte. The Earth fairly bristles with trees, with new research showing it has an estimated 3.04 trillion of them.

Walk Into History At This Year's European Heritage Open Days - Durkan

Environment Minister Mark H Durkan recently invited everyone in the Coleraine, Ballymena, Ballymoney and Ballycastle areas to enjoy the European Heritage Open Days (EHOD) Weekend on 12 and 13 September. History and culture will be brought to life with 34 historic properties and events opening across the North East areas. With all events free of charge and many which are family friendly, everyone can take the opportunity to step back in time.

Award Winning Bloom Garden comes to CUH

The ‘Lets clear the air with Cetriz’ themed garden, which won a well-deserved Bronze medal at Bloom in the ‘People’s Choice Award’ this year has found a permanent home on the grounds of Cork University Hospital. The garden will provide a relaxed space for patients and their families along with the dedicated team of staff at the hospital.

Farmleigh House – Plant Fair Sunday August 16th 10am to 5 pm

The annual late Summer Plant Fair will take place at Farmleigh House in the Phoenix Park on Sunday 16th August from 10 am to 5 pm. A significant number of ISNA members will be participating at this event. Garden writer Marie Staunton will give a variety of gardening talks on the day, and Christopher White of Three Gates Nursery will be giving a talk and demonstration of floral art. Make it a family day out with Food/Craft markets in the Farmyard, music in the Bandstand and a children’s garden area with games and workshops.

Derry Forest Competes for 'Woodland of the Year' Award

Judges from the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) Forestry Awards have visited Learmount Forest in the Park area of Co Derry. The forest is one of over 30 applicants across Ireland competing for the coveted prize of being named, ‘Woodland of the Year’.

It consists of a fully slated roof, solid timber uprights, hardwood deck to the base, surrounds closed in on two sides; one hardwood shelf to the rear right hand side and back; and two hand-made accoya hardwood seats, one of which is a swinging seat; and yes even here I bought the chain and cut it to length etc.

Durkan Commends Newry and South Armagh Community Groups Improving Local Environment

Environment Minister Mark H Durkan recently visited the Ring of Gullion Area of Natural Beauty group who were awarded funding in June through the Natural Environment Fund. The Minister also took the opportunity to visit two of the three community groups in Newry and South Armagh who will benefit from the DOE’s Challenge Fund. He met with The Ring of Gullion and Cooley Red Squirrel Group, and Ballyholland Sunshine Club, to see at first-hand how the funds will be spent.

Minister Michael Ring TD Officially Opens First Phase of Visitor Access Facilities at ‘Wild Nephin’ – Ireland’s First Wilderness Project


The new visitor facilities at Wild Nephin, which is a joint project between Coillte and the National Parks and Wildlife Service, include a new car park, a viewing platform and picnic tables, to facilitate enhanced visitor access and represents the first phase of a programme of works to create a self-sustaining ecosystem that will provide an authentic ‘wilderness experience’ for those that visit.

Old Shoes Find New Life in Children's Playgrounds

An estimated 2.6 million new shoes are sold in Europe annually and, each year, 1.5 million tons of old shoes plus 90 000 tons of by-products from shoe manufacturers end up being deposited in landfill sites or incineration, both of which are potentially harmful to the environment. This innovative project used a special shoe grinding process to recycle old shoes, incorporating them into a wide variety of new products.
